Estuvieron a un paso de llegar a su destino, Australia, el mercado de la cocaína más rentable del mundo y un importante objetivo para los narcotraficantes en tiempos recientes, sin embargo, no lograron hacerlo. Una pareja de narcotraficantes de nacionalidades británica y lituana fue detenida en la isla de Vanuatu, situada al noreste de Australia, tras observar cómo su velero encallaba en una zona costera debido al fuerte temporal.
«Un excelente trabajo de la Vanuatu Police Force (VPF) en la incautación de más de una tonelada de cocaína hallada en el Puerto Havannah, en la parte noroeste de Efate». De esta manera, la Policía Federal de Australia (AFP) expresó su agradecimiento hacia sus colegas de Vanuatu, quienes fueron responsables tanto de la intervención de la droga como de la detención de los dos sospechosos.
«A solicitud de la VPF, la AFP colabora estrechamente proporcionando apoyo operativo, así como asistencia especializada en la investigación y forense para su pesquisa sobre un yate que había encallado cerca de la costa en el puerto, el cual contenía la droga», añaden las autoridades australianas.
Este incidente representa un nuevo golpe a una vía de tráfico de drogas cada vez más activa y con participantes diversos, ya que a los colombianos, ecuatorianos y mexicanos –a quienes se les atribuye cierto control en la misma por parte del Cártel Jalisco Nueva Generación– ahora se suman narcotraficantes europeos que, utilizando embarcaciones de recreo, se aventuran en extensas rutas oceánicas.
«Estamos decididos a colaborar con nuestros socios policiales y lograr el mayor impacto posible contra los delincuentes que amenazan a nuestras comunidades jóvenes y vulnerables en el Pacífico y Australia», concluye la AFP.

They were just a step away from reaching their destination, Australia, the most profitable cocaine market in the world and a major target for drug traffickers in recent times; however, they did not succeed. A pair of drug traffickers of British and Lithuanian nationalities were arrested on the island of Vanuatu, located northeast of Australia, after their sailboat was observed running aground in a coastal area due to the severe storm.
"An excellent job by the Vanuatu Police Force (VPF) in seizing more than a ton of cocaine found in Port Havannah, in the northwest part of Efate." This is how the Australian Federal Police (AFP) expressed its gratitude to its Vanuatu colleagues, who were responsible for both the drug intervention and the arrest of the two suspects.
"At the request of the VPF, the AFP is closely collaborating by providing operational support, as well as specialized assistance in investigation and forensics for their inquiry into a yacht that had run aground near the coast in the port, which contained the drugs," the Australian authorities added.
This incident represents a new blow to an increasingly active drug trafficking route with diverse participants, as Colombians, Ecuadorians, and Mexicans—who are attributed some control over it by the Jalisco New Generation Cartel—are now joined by European drug traffickers who, using recreational vessels, venture into extensive ocean routes.
"We are determined to collaborate with our police partners and achieve the greatest possible impact against the criminals who threaten our young and vulnerable communities in the Pacific and Australia," concludes the AFP.
