Lo que afirmé en su momento es falso, y ahora es cuando expongo la verdad. Esta es la estrategia que ha seguido José Antonio C.R., el capitán del buque mercante Simione, embarcación que fue interceptada por la Guardia Civil mientras se dirigía a Galicia con aproximadamente tres toneladas de cocaína a finales de 2022. Esto se presentó en la primera sesión del juicio por estos hechos, que tuvo lugar en la mañana de este lunes en la Sección Quinta de la Audiencia Provincial de Pontevedra, en su sede ubicada en Vigo. Se trató de la denominada operación Sugar Brown, que resultó en la detención de 16 individuos, de los cuales solo cinco han llegado a esta fase final del proceso.

El testigo y acusado, quien en el momento de su detención en alta mar declaró que había sido contratado por el armador del barco, el vigués Pablo G.F., ahora rechaza dicha afirmación, sosteniendo que fue una tercera persona quien le encomendó el enorme narcotransporte. Este individuo, cuya identidad optó por no revelar ante el tribunal «por miedo», argumentó que «tengo familia». No obstante, sus respuestas a otras preguntas formuladas por el fiscal Antidroga, Servando Caíño, pusieron en entredicho esta nueva narrativa. Más bien sugieren la posibilidad de un pacto entre los acusados. El tiempo dirá.

Uno de los aspectos que hasta el momento no se habían dado a conocer y que el capitán del barco presentó en la vista oral de este lunes fue la existencia de un motín a bordo por parte de los tripulantes locales, quienes, según su relato, le infligieron dos puñaladas al enterarse de que su misión era recoger droga y no pescar. Estos tripulantes abandonaron la embarcación, que quedó con solo tres personas a bordo, cifra claramente insuficiente para operar una nave de tal envergadura que, según se suponía, se dirigía hacia las costas gallegas con la sustancia estupefaciente. Cuando llegó la UCO, se topó con lo que parecía ser un barco fantasma.

Adicionalmente, el citado capitán expuso que la embarcación presentaba problemas, tales como fallos en las máquinas que afectaban el timón. «Este barco está maldito», llegó a escribir en un mensaje de texto durante la travesía, según se reveló en la sesión de este lunes.

De acuerdo con el escrito de acusación del Ministerio Fiscal, cuatro de los cinco acusados habrían planificado meticulosamente el transporte de casi tres toneladas de cocaína desde África hasta Galicia. La operación requirió una logística marítima compleja que incluía escalas estratégicas y el uso de un buque pesquero con bandera angoleña para ocultar la actividad ilícita.

La embarcación cargó la droga en el suroeste de Cabo Verde y debía entregarla a lanchas rápidas en el entorno de la Península Ibérica, según lo afirmado por los investigadores. La Fiscalía ha solicitado penas que suman más de 56 años de prisión y multas conjuntas que ascienden a 2.500 millones de euros para los acusados, en uno de los casos más significativos de narcotráfico marítimo en Galicia en los últimos años.

One of the aspects that had not been disclosed until now and that the ship's captain presented in the oral hearing this Monday was the existence of a riot on board by the local crew members, who, according to his account, inflicted two stab wounds upon learning that their mission was to collect drugs and not to fish. These crew members abandoned the vessel, which was left with only three people on board, a clearly insufficient number to operate a ship of such magnitude that, according to reports, was heading towards the Galician coasts with the narcotic substance. When the UCO arrived, they encountered what appeared to be a ghost ship.

Additionally, the aforementioned captain stated that the vessel had problems, such as engine failures that affected the steering. "This ship is cursed," he reportedly wrote in a text message during the voyage, as revealed in the session this Monday.

According to the indictment from the Public Prosecutor's Office, four of the five accused had meticulously planned the transport of nearly three tons of cocaine from Africa to Galicia. The operation required complex maritime logistics that included strategic stops and the use of an Angolan-flagged fishing vessel to conceal the illicit activity.

The ship loaded the drugs in the southwest of Cape Verde and was supposed to deliver them to speedboats in the vicinity of the Iberian Peninsula, according to investigators. The Prosecutor's Office has requested sentences totaling more than 56 years in prison and joint fines amounting to 2.5 billion euros for the accused, in one of the most significant maritime drug trafficking cases in Galicia in recent years.
